The church of SANTO SPIRITO and the BRANCACCI CHAPEL - 3 hours

A trip to the south bank of the Arno River, the Oltrarno, will take you away from the noisier throngs of the city's center into a more residential, artisan quarter of town.  The Church of Santo Spirito is in the very heart of  this delightful district where, in medieval  times, many wool-dyers had their workshops.

Santo Spirito was founded in the 13th century and by the 14th had become an important intellectual center.  It was the great Brunelleschi who designed  a new church here. The interior is a splendid example of Renaissance art.

A short distance away is the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine and the Brancacci Chapel, so famous for the remarkable Masaccio frescoes on its walls. The profound influence that these frescoes had on Florentine Renaissance painting cannot be overemphasized. It is our good fortune that they have recently been restored to their original vibrant colors.
