SANTA MARIA NOVELLA and its ancient PHARMACY

The beautiful Dominican church and cloisters of Santa Maria Novella stand on the western side of the city on a square which, in medieval times, was often used for tournaments and other pageants.

Recently, the interior of the church underwent extensive restoration.  Consequently, visitors are now able to enjoy its austere yet elegant atmosphere much more fully than before and also to appreciate the strong influence of the Cistercian Gothic style which is dominant.  Among the countless masterpieces found in Santa Maria Novella are the "Crocifisso" ("Crucifix") by Giotto (1290) and the "Trinita' " ("Trinity") by Masaccio (1424).  Both of them are even more spectacular as a result of their restoration.

Very near the church the Dominicans also founded a pharmacy in 1221 which has sold wonderful spices since the 16th century.  This large shop is located in an old chapel and the delicate, unique scents created within come wafting out into the street temporarily enveloping the fortunate passersby with their delicious aromas.
