The PITTI PALACE: the Palatine Gallery - 3 hours

In 1457, construction began on what would become the massive Renaissance Pitti Palace we see today. The original building was ordered by rich local merchant Luca Pitti and was later bought by the Medici family.  It became the official residence of three dynasties: the Medici, the grand dukes of Lorraine and the royal house of Savoy. The latter occupied the palace apartments until 1919 when King Vittorio Emanuele III presented the building to the State.

Among the many museums within the Pitti, the Palatine Gallery is the most important. It was named for the last of the Medici, Anna Maria, who had married the Elector Palatine. In the luxurious interior, there is a splendid collection of 16th, 17th and 18th-century paintings which includes famous works of Raphael, Titian, Andrea del Sarto and Rubens.

Here you can surely enjoy one of the richest art galleries in the world.
