The MEDICI-RICCARDI PALACE and the MEDICI CHAPELS - 3 hours

In 1444, Michelozzo began construction of the Medici-Riccardi Palace by order of Cosimo dei Medici "The Elder". With his grandson, Lorenzo "The Magnificent", it became a princely court which offered hospitality to poets, philosophers, men of science and artists. Young Michelangelo and Botticelli were among them.

Inside the Palace is a precious little gem of a chapel. Its walls are entirely covered with rich, magnificent frescoes painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1459. Entitled the "Procession of the Magi", the frescoes also represent and honor the Medici and other famous people of the time.

Behind the Palace, in the Church of San Lorenzo, we find the Medici Chapels. Included are the huge crypt where most of the Medici family is buried, the Chapel of the Princes and Michelangelo's New Sacristy where the most famous Medici tombs are found. This was Michelangelo's first commission as an architect. The sublimely beautiful, allegorical, unfinished sculptures of "Day", "Night", "Dawn" and "Dusk" make this ensemble breathtaking.
